How Ozempic Works

Ozempic mimics the GLP-1 hormone to improve blood sugar control and reduce appetite. It stimulates insulin release when blood sugar is high and slows gastric emptying.

Effectiveness

While approved for diabetes, Ozempic users typically see weight loss of 10-15% of body weight. It's less than Wegovy's higher doses but still significant.

Dosing

Weekly injection starting at 0.25mg for 4 weeks, then 0.5mg. Can increase to 1mg or 2mg based on glycemic response. Lower maximum dose than Wegovy.

FDA-Approved Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes management
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease

Common Side Effects

  • Risk of pancreatitis
  • May worsen diabetic retinopathy
